Ted spoke at the first-year orientation ceremonies for the University of Georgia's newly founded School of Social Work. Norma Robertson, a student in attendance that day, had written an excerpt from his address in her journal:

"Hold fast, naked, as intended, to a reef of razorblades and broken glass amidst a tempest of doubt. Your survival will prove the majority rotten."
